A Beautiful Detour

I drove home from Houston the other day and found myself on a detour. At first, I was resistant to the new direction my GPS was trying to lead me but, eventually, I drove over a hill and saw the traffic jam I was quickly approaching and took the exit to the detour at the very last minute. I drove along country roads I had never traveled before.

As I meandered along the new path, the beautiful blue skies and green grass met one another in glorious panoramic views of Central Texas. I was happily soaking it all in when , suddenly, I topped a hill and actually gasped out loud at the beauty spreading out in every direction ahead of me. Immense fields of bluebonnets lay stretched across the horizon. Bright blue flowers and green grass as far as I could see. Sleek, chocolate brown cows standing in the middle of the bluebonnets with their calves close by. The contrast of the cows and the bluebonnets was breathtaking. I laughed when I saw that the field had been previously discovered by a photographer who was taking photos of a young family in the middle of the field. A mother was throwing her young child happily above her head while the photographer captured the moment.

The detour was exactly what I needed to break up the monotony of the freeway. I was thrilled that God had diverted me to the route that I had never traveled before on the all-too-familiar trek home.

Life is like that at times. We are resistant to the detour God is giving to us in the form of sudden change or an unexpected direction God is leading us. We like to travel the same, expected roads with the same, predictable scenery and the same, reliable people. We don’t really like change because it feels foreign, unknown, and somewhat scary. God wants us to be open to new things, new experiences, and new people.

Let Him lead you along on an exciting, beautiful journey. You never know what breathtaking, new view He will reveal to you along the way.
